Venerable Master Hsing Yun was born in Jiangdu, Jiangsu, China in 1927, departed in 2023, and was the 48th-generation lineage holder of the Linji Chan School. He came to Taiwan in 1949, and in 1953 resided at the Yilan Nianfo Society, laying the foundation for Dharma propagation. In 1967, he established Fo Guang Shan, dedicated to culture, education, charity, and spiritual cultivation.

Under his leadership, nearly 300 temples and monasteries were founded worldwide, along with Humanistic Buddhism TV and the Merit Times.

Globally, seventeen Buddhist colleges were established, as well as Pu-Men High School in Taiwan and five universities: Hsi Lai University in the United States, Nanhua and Fo Guang Universities in Taiwan, Nan Tien University in Australia, and Guang Ming College in the Philippines. Together, they form the first international “Fo Guang Shan University Consortium.”

In 1992, he founded the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), serving as its founding president, and was also honorary president of the World Fellowship of Buddhists.

His collected writings, including the Complete Works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, amount to over 40 million characters and have been translated into more than 20 languages, spreading the ideals of Humanistic Buddhism across the globe.
