About Buddha's Light Association
Singapore

Fo Guang Shan (Singapore) and BLIA-Singapore Chapter complement each other like the two wings of a bird. Under the guidance of the advising venerables, BLIA members are able to cultivate merits and wisdom through their support of the temple, by organising activities, attending classes, by engaging the public and interacting among themselves.

Committee members also play an active role in serving the community. By extending the role of the temple, both the individual and nation will benefit. This accords with Venerable Master's expectations of BLIA members: to pursue life education and enrichment, and contribute to the welfare of all sentient beings.

When all conditions were right, Buddha's Light International Association, Singapore Chapter was formed on December 2, 1993. To carry out the vision of Venerable Master, the President of the Overseas Executive Council, Venerable Tzu Chuang, came to Singapore to look for a place for the local Chapter. After some effort, she established Singapore Fo Kuang Yuan along the Upper East Coast Road. It started operations on December 8, 1996. Since then, the seed of humanistic Buddhism has been flourishing on a new fertile land. It also signified a further step towards realising the Ven. Master's compassionate vow aspiration of "May the Buddha's light shine universally on the three thousand realms; Let the Dharma stream flow across all five continents”.

Fo Kuang Yuan was consequently relocated to the 6th floor of ACE Industrial Building off Paya Lebar Road in 1998 to continue propagation of the Dharma and support for its devotees.

In 2000, Fo Guang Shan (Singapore) FGS(S)| was officially registered. A site of 2,000 square metres in Punggol new town was acquired in 2004, and the new temple building opened its door to the public on January 26, 2008.

The four stanzas  for BLIA's members are:

  • May kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity pervade all worlds.

  • May we cherish and build affinities to benefit all beings.

  • May  Chan, Pure Land and Precepts inspire equality and patience.

  •  May our humility and gratitude give rise to great vows.

Exemplifying the noble idea of the Buddha, the founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, has been devotedly propagating Humanistic Buddhism. For this, he sets up centres in many places over the world, and Singapore has also benefited from it.
